12/27/2008- The Killingworth Guppies returned to the Zrink this past weekend to defend their 2007 Zrink Santa's Classic Holiday Tournament Title. This years tournament had a new format with 7 teams participating in the tournament. Depending on how you finished in your first two games you were placed into a Gold Division or Silver Division. The Guppies welcomed some new blood and a familiar face to help their 2008 championship swim. Andy Frey, formerly of the LI 495ers played net for the Guppies. He quickly learned that the Guppies have no real defense and that it would be a busy day in the net. Also, the Guppies brought back fan favorite Craig Zito for the tournament. Zito has been living in semisecultion up in Boston but Guppies management were able to talk him out of retirement for this years tourney.

In game one the Guppies faced off against the Avalanche, a team the fish lost to in the 2006 Xmas Tourney finals. The Guppies came out flying in game one and took it to Joe Sakic and company. With timely scoring and solid net minding the Gupps cruised to a 4-2 win over the Lanche. In Game two, the Guppies faced a very strong/young Glastonbury Alumni team. The fish managed to swim with Glastonbury early on but in the end the Alumni school was too fast and the Killingworth fell 7-3. (Congrats to Glastonbury for capturing the Gold division Championship!)

In the Re-seed Round the Guppies faced off against the Blaze. Winner of this game would move on to the Championship game. Andy Frey put on a show as he made several great saves early on to keep the fish in the game. The Gupps finally broke though and beat the talented Blaze team 5-3. In the Finals, the Guppies would again face the Avalanche. This game was no competition as the Lanche were missing one of their best players. Killingworth easily swam to another Championship and T-shirt (Red....very festive!) 10-3. Thanks to all the Guppie Faithful that attended this years tourney. See you next year as the fish go for the Three-peat!
