Guppies Escape The Panthers in OT 10-9

Glastonbury, CT May12, 2004. ZRink - Killingworth Guppies Spring 2004 season.

 

5/12/04- The Killingworth Guppies had a real test Wednesday night  as the faced off against the Panthers. It was suppose to be an easy victory for the Guppies but someone forgot to tell the Panthers that. The Cats would strike first to give them the one goal lead before Marc Crayton tap in a rebound from a Rob Murphy shot. The Panther's would score on their second shot of the game and then again on their fourth shot of the game.  The Guppies were down by two when Mike Halle scored his first of the season on a great shot from the point. Only .18 seconds later Murphy would tie the game at three off a great individual effort. Halfway through the first half the Gupps would take the lead when Dan Pequita connected with a pass from Brian Kelly. With the Guppies up 4-3 late in the first the Panthers came roaring back and took a 5-4 lead. Crayton would tie the game scoring his second of the game with 4:01 left in the half. However, the Panthers would grab the First half lead with .39 seconds remaining. The Panthers had the Guppies in some shallow water and the were draining the tank.

Early in the Second the Panthers would add to there lead as the Guppies were still looking for their defense. Murphy and Pequita would score a goal apiece to tie the game at Seven. The Guppies would take the one goal lead when Brian Kelly scored his first of the night. As they did all night the Panthers came back and scored  twice in the final minutes of the game to regain their lead. The Guppies called a time out with 2:45 remaining in the game in an attempt to regroup. With just :21 seconds remaining in Regulation Kelly passed to Pequita who beat the Panther's netminder to the short side. The Guppies and Panther went to a three minute overtime. In OT the Guppies controlled the play as Dan Pequita scored the game winner from the point with just .35 seconds remaining. The Guppies survived a serious scare from the Panthers and hopefully learned a lesson from their poor defensive play. The Guppies face-off  this Sunday at 4pm against a strong Brick Rd Brawlers team. No tickets are available as the current number one team faces off against the leagues second place team.

SIDENOTES:

- Brian Mulcahy and Tim Poulin were healthy scratches on Wednesday night.

- Joe Linskey doubled his Goal Against Wednesday night. Before the game his total Goals Against was 9 in three games. After the fourth game he had 18 goals against.

- This Sunday will be the Tom Mierkiewicz last game with the Guppies. Tom has been with the Guppies since 2002 and has won two championships in four seasons with the team. Sunday has been declared Tom Mierkiewicz day in Killingworth by the town council.

- Wednesday night's game vs the Panthers had 7 lead changes during the night. It was also the Guppies first Regular season OT game.
