Guppies Go to the Reserve Pond for Victory!

Glastonbury, CT July 18, 2012. ZRink - Killingworth Guppies Summer 2012 season.

06/18/2012- Wednesday night the Guppies looked very different with several key members on Vacation in parts unknown. With the light roster the Guppies flew in some former high priced talent. Names like Zito, Lagana, and Stevenson were all called up, however Stevenson was a late scratch. To make matters worse the Guppies started the game with only 5 players prompting the other team to ask "Where is the rest of your team? You guys normally have 13 guys!". The Hurleys saw the Guppies shortened bench as an opportunity but, not so fast! Mike Lagana (2-0-2) apparently hasn't missed a beat in his time away from the rink, as he scored the first goal of the game, redirecting a pass from Brian Kelly (3-3-6) into the net. The Hurley's quickly answered as Kelly redirected a shot off his skate and past a confused Greg Marshall! Marshy asked a great question in a post game interview "Why do we have Kelly playing defense?". Sorry Greg, that's a question many Guppy netminder's have asked themselves over the years, I'll get you Joe Linskey's # so you guys can talk. Seconds after "the redirect" BK redeemed himself by picking off a Hurley's clearing attempted in the low slot and tapped it into the net. The Guppies would open a 3-1 lead as Kelly scored again  giving the Fish some much needed breathing room. However, Late in the half the Hurleys would make it 3-2 and thats the way the first twenty minutes finished up.

The Second Half saw some chippie play start to develop and some of Don's off the wall reffing calls were also starting to pop up. If we broke down the latter we could be here all day, lets just say both teams had reasons to complain.....and they did! Both teams also traded scoring opportunities but, were thwarted time and again. Finally, the all important next goal went to the Hurleys, as they tied the game at Three. A few minutes later The Hurleys grabbed their first lead of the night, after a tired Guppies unit couldn't get off the dek. With that goal the Guppies were finally able to make a change. On the following face off, Kelly came down and fired a shot that hit the far post. Dave Armenai (1-0-1) came in crashing and drilled the rebound into the Hurley's net....All tied up at Four! The Guppies continued their pressure off the next puck drop...This time it was BK throwing a blind shot from the corner that went in.... 5-4 Guppies! Again, the Hurleys answered to tied the game! With the seconds ticking down The Guppies controlled the play and worked the puck down low finally getting the puck to Lagana. Mikey fired a shot from the opposite corner  which eluded the Hurley's netminder....6-5 Gups! The Hurley's pulled their goalie and made a late charge but were unable to beat Marshy....Guppies Win!

Next week the Guppies hope to have everyone back as they face off against the Saints! Game time is 9pm and limited seats are available. .

SIDE NOTES:
- Brian Blair, Rob Murphy, Keith Millen, Jon Stevenson, and Tim Poulin were all healthy scratches .

- Cray mixed it up Wednesday night taking on not one but, Two Hurley players. Crayton received a matching penalty for the incident, unfortunately the Refs took the worse of the two Hurley players to serve with Cray. Post game, the Guppies joked that Marc choose the wrong dancing partner.
