Guppies Loss One Win Another to Stay Alive

Glastonbury, CT August 15, 2012. ZRink - Killingworth Guppies Summer 2012 season.

08/15/2012-The Guppies opened the 2012 Summer Playoffs in prime position for their 12th League Championship, earning the top seed and facing the 4th place Hurleys in game one of the Double Elimination tournament. The Guppies came in confident, maybe too confident, and found themselves down 1-0 less than two minutes into the game. The Fish tied the game after Keith Millen (1-1-2) won a faceoff back to Brian Kelly (2-0-2) who fired the puck into the net. However, the Guppies never looked right the entire game. It might have been the extra week off or the fact that the moon and stars had aligned just right. One thing for sure is the Guppies looked awful in game one and the Hurleys took advantage. The Hurleys took a 2-1 lead into the Second Half before Keith Millen's Power Play Goal tied the game at two. Again the Hurleys struck quickly after the Gupps tally to reclaim the lead. Kelly scored to tie it at Three.....but yet again the Hurley's scored to take the lead. In the end, the Fish pulled Greg Marshall but couldn't find the tying goal. The Hurleys scored the empty netter and went home early....moving on to next week's Winner Bracket games.

With the loss the Guppies moved into the "Losers Bracket" and awaited the loser beaten the Saints/Mean Machine match up. The Saint's went onto victory setting up the MM vs Guppies contest to see who plays next Wednesday night.

As in Game one, the Mean Machine struck early scoring .49 seconds into the game. Greg Marshall seemed to be having a tough night in the Guppies net. When asked about Marshall's in a post game interview Team Captain Brian Kelly said "Marshy has won us several games this year single handily so, we owe him a few more!". A couple of minutes later the Guppies offense finally woke up as Millen (4-0-4) and Dan Pequita (3-2-5) got together to rattle off the next Three goals....giving the Fish a 3-1 lead. The MM fought back tying the game at before the Guppies rattle off the next FIVE goals (goals scored by: Pequita, Millen, Poulin, Kelly, and Pequita again) to take a 8-3 lead. At one point Mean Machine, a team made up mostly of 20yr old guys, took a time out. One player screamed at his bench "we're losing to a bunch of guys in their 30s!" This reporter would like to point out that Dave Armenai and Marc Crayton are actually in the 40's while Marshy is only in his 20's but the rest of us are in our Thirty's. Which means it was a good observation from that player. The Fish seemed to be on their way....When the "token" Dom call came into play. MM was awarded a goal after a shot hit the post and game straight out. Dom called it a goal and the momentum swung. MM scored the next Three goals after that to make it a 8-7 game late in the Second Half. However, Millen scored to give the Fish a 9-7 lead and the victory.

With the win, the Guppies will face off at 8pm Wednesday night vs the loser of the Saints/Hurleys game (7pm). If the Guppies win that game they will move on to face the winner of the 7pm game for the League Championship. Stay tuned!
