Deflated: Guppies Beat Ball Smashers 9-7!

Glastonbury, CT June 27, 2006. ZRink - Killingworth Guppies Summer 2006 season.

6/27/2006- Tuesday night the Guppies looked sluggish in warmups and they looked even worse in the opening minutes of their game vs the Ball Smashers. The last time these two teams met they combined for three goals; A 2-1 overtime victory for the Gupps. Just as the fans started to settle in for a defensive struggle the Ball Smashers opened up a 3-0 lead on our beloved heroes. The Guppies struggled for offense, the fact that Guppies leading scorer (Tim Poulin) was moved to defense didn't help matters, and they were turned away time and time again by the Smasher's defense.  Finally, just past the midpoint of the First Half the Guppies would get on the board as Dan Pequita (4-1-5) fired a low shot past the Smashers's netminder. The Guppies were finally on the board and they began to close the gap when Pequita scored again to make it a 3-2 game. The Ball Smashers would regain the two goal lead when Jim Miller fired a low shot that eluded Joe Linskey. Jason Zito (1-1-2) scored in the final seconds of the half to bring the Guppies within one, down 4-3 at the Half.

In the Second Half the Guppies got to swim with the current and not against it (which is always easier folks) as they slowly started to take control of the game. Tim Poulin (2-2-4) got it started scoring just over a minute into the half.  Pequita, who had the hot hand, scored just moments later to give the Guppies their first lead of the night. The Guppies continued to pour it on as Poulin scored .29 seconds later to give the Fish a two goal lead. Up by two and in control of the play a lesser fan would think "hey, the Guppies got this one!". No, No my friend ....these are the Guppies and with Linskey in the net no lead is safe! Sure enough a minute after taking the two goal lead Linskey would get beat "Five Hole" on a slow but low shot. Keith Millen (1-2-3) would score to regain the two goal lead but not to be out done Linskey was quick to give that back. "Sometimes I wonder if Joe is trying to give games away" stated Guppies defenseman Jon Stevenson. Linskey was quick to respond "Tell Stevenson he needs to at least play three games in one season before he can share his opinion!". The teams came to blows, when Linskey was hacked while covering a puck, Zito was quick to take down the guilty party but he landed on Linskey and all heck broke loose. The refs cleared the scene and the two teams played with a lot of spirit in the final minutes.  Late in the game Poulin won a crucial face off that led to Pequita's empty net goal which he shot from the Guppies goal line. Game over!!

The Guppies will take next week off as the team celebrates America's Birthday, Happy 230th America!! The Guppies will be participating in the Killingworth 4th of July parade. They will be on the Guppies Float "A salute to America's favorite NonProfessional Sports Franchise". Not to mention, five lucky fans will be asked to join the team on the float. To get your chance to join the team on the float get to the parade route early!!  The following week the Gupps will be back in action as they face off against District 5 on July 11th at 10pm.
