ReZoned: Guppies Flatten District 5; 9-2!

Glastonbury, CT June 13, 2006. ZRink - Killingworth Guppies Summer 2006 season.

The Killingworth Guppies opened their Summer 2006 season in front of another packed house at the Zrink. The Fish were trying to shake the disappointment of a championship lost the week before at the hands of the Fire Ants. Tonight's opponent? The always tough District 5 hockey club. The Guppies would start the scoring early as Tim Poulin (2-3-5) found Brian Kelly (2-1-3) in the high slot. District 5 would fight back but were thwarted every time by the strong goal tending of Jon Graney. "Jon was great tonight, It's nice to have a guy in net that can stop some shots" stated Poulin in a post game interview. Graney himself was alittle more modest "The guys were great in front on me. They made my job that much easier". Wow, what a difference from the typical Linskey post game interview. The Gupps would take a 2-0 lead midway through the half on Kelly's second of the game. Keith Millen(3-0-3) scored only a minute later to give the Gupps a 3-0 lead. Later, Stevenson would take a penalty putting the Fish on the penalty kill. During the PK, Poulin and Rob Murphy (2-2-4) would break in on the D-5 net. Murphy would finish the play by roofing the puck over the goalie's left shoulder. Millen second goal of the game, rounded out the Guppies first half scoring and give the Fish a comfortable 5-0 lead.

In the Second, Millen would pick up where he left off in the First Half scoring his second of the game just over a minute in. D-5 would get on the board, scoring on a 2-on-1 opportunity down low. The two teams would trade scoring though the middle of the half as both teams started to feel the effects of the heat which was locked in inside the Zrink. With just over five minutes remaining Poulin would score the Guppies second shorthanded goal. Leading 7-1, the Guppies were in control and on their way to winning the season opener. Poulin and Murphy would score late in the half, Murphy's goal was actually scored from the red line, to put the game out of reach.

The Guppies season schedule has yet to be released but check back often.
