Official Press Release

Guppies Take Boot To Squirrel Kickers 4-3

Glastonbury, CT August 25, 2010. ZRink - Killingworth Guppies Summer 2010 season.

08/25/2010- The shorthanded Guppies outlasted the also shorthanded Squirrel Kickers.  The most notable player out of the Guppies line up was Captain Brian Kelly who missed the game with a bout of Fenway Fever, nevertheless, the Guppies were up to the challenge.  Assistant Captains Marc Crayton and Rob Murphy juggled the line combinations and defensive pairings before the game and the Guppies were off and swimming.

The Guppies would get on the board 1st as Jason Zito (3-1-4) would score the 1st of his 3 goals on a set up by Mike Lagana (0-1-1) and Rob Murphy (0-1-1).  The Squirrel Kickers would later tie the score with their only goal of the 1st half.  Zito would add his 2nd goal on the power play on a feed from Frank Rego (1-1-2) that Zito re-directed with his leg in a non-kicking motion.  The Squirrel Kicker players hotly contested the goal, but the ZRink video review judge confirmed that after further review, it was a legitimate goal.  Zito would get the natural hat-trick scoring his 3rd goal late in the 1st half taking a pass from Marc Crayton (0-2-2) and making the score 3 to 1.

As is always the case with Guppies hockey, no lead is safe.  Most of the 2nd half featured a tight checking game and outstanding goal tending as both goalies kept their teams in the game.  Joe Linskey would make the majority of his 19 saves in the second half when the Guppies needed him most.  The Squirrel Kickers would finally pull within 1 goal when they scored at the 11:29 mark to make it a 3 to 2 game.  Minutes later, the Squirrel Kickers would tie it up at 3 - 3. The Guppies continued to put pressure on the Squirrel Kickers defense with strong fore checking by both forward lines and eventually it lead to the game winning goal.  Crayton dug the puck out of the corner and fed it to Zito and Zito found Rego at the point and Rego found the back of the net for the game winner.

The Guppies wrap up the regular season this Wednesday against ESPN @ 8:00.  Please check the Guppies website for play-off ticket package information.
