Scary Stuff: Guppies Beat Monster 6-2!
Glastonbury, CT July 10, 2005. ZRink - Killingworth Guppies Spring 2005 season.
July 10, 2005 - When the Guppies took to the Dek Sunday they were coming back from a "Vacation" that lasted over two weeks. It was obvious that in those two weeks nobody cleaned the Guppies Fishbowl as the team looked a bit sluggish from the start. "It was bad in the locker room! I mean Linskey's mom had to get him dressed" stated Jason Zito. However, the Guppies would strike first when Dave Armenia (0-1-1) intercepted a Monster break out pass and sent in a streaking Tim Poulin (2-3-5) alone on a breakaway. The Guppies continued the pressure but were having a tough time finding the net. John Stevenson (1-1-2) looked to have scored only moments after Poulin but the puck hit the post and never crossed the line. A real swing in momentum came a few minutes later when Monster scored to make it 1-1. It would remain tied at one late in the first half until Rob Murphy scored his first of the night, Guppies up 2-1 at the half.
In the second the Guppies tired defensive corps (Stevenson, Murphy, and Kelly) got some relief when Brian Mulcahy (1-0-1) showed up from playing in the "Coors Light Golf Invitational". With the reinforcements sent in Murphy would score his second of the night to give the Gupps the 3-1 lead. Only seconds later Poulin would make a great pass from low in the the Monster's zone to hit Mulcahy, Mulcahy then roofed the pass on the top left side of the net. The Guppies had the 4-1 lead and some breathing room. Late in the second, Poulin continued to display his playmaking abilities by setting up Stevenson on a one timer. The Guppies would make it 6-1 with just over two minutes remaining when Poulin scored on a long shot from just inside the red line. "I'm thinking that should have been worth at least two goals" Poulin told the press in the post game interviews. Monster would add a goal in the final minute of play to make it 6-2. Joe Linskey looked to be back in form last night in the Guppies net. After posting a career high 5.00 GAA in the first two games of the season he only allowed 2 goals on 15 shots. Linskey stated "I went to see (Marc) Crayton's Sports Psychologist during our break and that seemed to help me get back on my game"
Guppies face off Thursday July 14th against the Dead Goalies, game time is 7pm!
SIDE NOTES:
- Dan Pequita, John Carroll, and Mike Halle were all healthy scratches.
- In his Guppies debut John Stevenson scored the "Gordie Howe" Hat trick scoring one goal, one assist, and adding 2 minutes in penalties. Nice work Rookie, now get me my Powerade!
- Only minutes before the game Stevenson bought himself some new Mission roller blades and it's a good thing. Upon further review of John's old skates it was confirmed that they originally belong to Christopher Columbus (That means they were old Linskey!).
- Call Up: Brian Mulcahy got the call to dress in Sunday's game only an hour and a half before game time. Mulcahy was on the golf course but managed to shot a 43 and make for the start of the second half.
