Glastonbury, CT August 18, 2005. ZRink - Killingworth Guppies Spring 2005 season.
August18, 2005- The Guppies and Fire Ants faced off for the second time in as many weeks. Last Thursday night in the first game playing by these two teams the Guppies skated off with a 12-2 lopsided victory. However, this night things were much different as many of the Fire Ants missing players from the week before were in the lineup and the Guppies were minus their top two leading scorers Tim Poulin and Rob Murphy. The Ants would take an early 2-0 lead as Joe Linskey seemed to struggle from the start. "One of their first goals against Joe was scored behind the goal line....Where's Bob Burbank when you need him?" asked a confused Dan Pequita. Hold on Danny it only gets worse as Linskey allowed not one, not two, but Three goals to be scored against him from behind the Goal line. In the post game interview Linskey defended himself "I suck! what.... are you people just realizing that now?" The Guppies managed to tie the game at two as Brian Kelly (2-1-3) and Jason Zito (1-1-2) scored less than a minute apart. However, as they did all night, the Ants would answer and gain the 3-2 lead late in the First. With Just over a minute left in the half John Carroll (0-1-1) fed the puck to Jon Stevenson (2-2-4) who scored to tie the game at Three.
The Ants started the Second Half on the power play and they used the advantage to create some room between themselves and the Guppies. The Ants scored on the Power Play and then rattled off the next two goals to take a commanding 6-3 lead. However the Guppies weren't about to go away that easily. Marc Crayton(1-0-1) stopped the bleeding on a great individual effort. Crayton went into the corner (yeah, I know what you are thinking Crayton and Corners? Last time any of us saw Crayton in a corner fighting for a puck Flannel shirts were cool!) with Fire Ants defenseman Jaime Carroll. Not only did Marc win the battle in the corner but he skated the puck out and beat the Ants goaltender Brian Miltz on a backhand shot. Crayton's effort helped spark the Guppies offense as Kelly would score his second of the night only moments later. With the score 6-5 the Guppies were hoping to be able to get the advantage. However, it was not to be as the Ants scored twice to regain their three goal lead. Midway through the Half Stevenson would score to make it 8-6 but again the Ants would answer. With just over Three minutes remaining Dan Pequita (1-1-2) scored to give the Guppies some life. The Fish pulled Linskey for the extra attacker but were unable to beat Miltz. Despite the loss the Guppies remained upbeat, as Guppies Assistant Captain John Carroll put it "I'd rather lose today than lose in the Playoffs".
The Guppies face off next week against Monster. Game time is 7pm!
SIDE NOTES:
- Rob Murphy, Tim Poulin, and Joe Linskey were scratches Thursday night (actually Linskey was there but his game was no where to be found)
- Joseph Linskey has lost back to back games since he was in net for a 7-5 loss to the Biohazard on 6/8/03 then lost again to the Gary Coleman Project 9-7 on 6/11/03.
- Mike Halle recorded his first point of the season assisting on Jon Stevenson 2nd goal of the night. Halle has become more of a defensive defenseman in recent seasons. "Mike has really sacrificed his offensive numbers to tighten up our defensive zone" stated Guppies assistant Captain John Carroll.
- Thursday's lose could have cost the Guppies the #1 seed for the Playoffs as District 6 was nipping on their fins coming into the game.
- The Johnson Family from Haddam, CT won themselves a new set of Anderson Doors thanks to Linskey giving up three goals scored from behind the goal line. Remember, you to can win a set of Doors from the Anderson people evey time Linskey gives up three goals from behind the goal line in the Anderson Doors "Linskey's at the Back Door Contest". Sign up today for your chance to win!!
