Guppies Put Out Fire Ants 12-2
Glastonbury, CT August 11, 2005. ZRink - Killingworth Guppies Summer 2005 season
August 11th 2005, Guppies beat Fire Ants 12-2 the game was over 11 minutes into second half. Guppies season record stands at 7-1. This high scoring win over the Fire Ants helped the Guppies clinch first place seed going into playoffs, edging out a 7-1 District 6 by a few goals on the season. The Guppies were looking for the redeemer this week and they got it, coming off the upset from the Cyclones that snapped their 27 game winning streak.
Getting on the board first was Rob Murphy who voluntarily scored the first goal unassisted a few minutes into play. Pequita would follow 10 seconds later off the ensuing face-off with assistance from Zito and Fong. The Pequita/Zito combo struck again at 11:45, with Poulin and Carroll to follow. Poulin would find the net again to put the fish ahead by 5-0 with about 3 and a half minutes left in the half. I should mention that the Fire Ants were short on the bench as they had only one sub all night, and there net minder looked a little green around the gills.
To start the second half the Ants came out swinging and snuck one past Bob the Guppies stand-in net minder, to put them on the board and remove shutout potential. Brian (Fong) Mulchay would answer with assistance from Jay Zito to spark the second half Guppy offense. Poulin and Murphy would connect for 2 quick goals to put the Fish ahead 8-1. Andrade found net for the Ants, beating a screened Guppy netminder to score their second and final goal for the evening. John (that's how I roll) Carroll would find net tonight threading the needle through the Ants defense, from a Murphy pass. Rob Murphy, Jay Zito, and Brian Mulchay would all follow to put the Guppies up by 10 points and get them out early at the 8:49 mark.
Must mention there were some great defensive plays tonight, Halle and Carroll
hammered the Ants offense all night. Bob the "stand in goalie" for
the Fish was outstanding stopping 14 out of the 16 shots on net. Fire Ants
net minder broke his borrowed goalie stick making him useless in the net for
the second half.
Side Notes:
- It was a stat sheet bonanza, with Kelly off for the week
- It was Rob Murphy's birthday today, officially making the majority of the Guppies now over 30
- Styles Crayton, My-way Kelly, Rookie Stevenson, and JoJo Linskey were all healthy scratches
