Official Press Release

The Mighty Guppies of Killingworth Down District 6!

Glastonbury, CT July 28, 2005. ZRink - Killingworth Guppies Spring 2005 season.

July 28 2005 - Thursday night the Guppies faced off against a Strong District 6 team in a battle of the remaining undefeated teams. The Gupps came into the game at 5-0-0, while District 6 posted a 6-0-0 record! Early in the day District 6 got some horrible news as Carlton Ducksworth made a deal with Zrink officials to have the District lines redrawn. As it worked out  District 6 lost some key players because of the change, gone were Adam Banks, Charlie Conway, Fulton Reed, and Greg Goldberg! Not to mention the District's coach, Gordon Bombay, was still trying to make it a go on a local minor league hockey team at the tender age of 45! Traumatizing as all this was the District took to the dek on Thursday night. Brian Kelly (1-2-3) would get the Guppies on the board first when he ripped a slap shot into the upper left corner of the net. Tim Poulin (3-0-3) kept the ball rolling as he scored his first of the night only two minutes later.  Up 2-0 the Guppies were controlling the play as the District struggled to get anything going. Jason Zito (2-1-3) and Dan Pequita (2-0-2) scored only seconds apart to give the Guppies a commanding 4-0 lead. District 6 would stop the bleeding scoring to make it 4-1 but the Guppies came right back as both Poulin and Pequita scored their second goals of the night. The teams would trade goals at the end of the period as Rob Murphy (1-3-4) took a pass from John Carroll (0-2-2) for his only goal of the night. At the Half the Guppies were cruising, up 7-2. However, these are the Guppies and it's never over till its over!

The Second Half started just as the Guppies could have hoped for as Zito tapped in a pass from Kelly. Just over a minute later Poulin scored his Third goal of the night as he skated across the District's slot and put the puck into the net. with 16:03 remaining the Guppies were up 9-2 and the talk quickly changed to the opportunity of a mercy victory. However, someone flushed the toilet and the Guppies started to go down the drain! Things started to go bad as Linskey allowed a  goal off a shot from the far blue line. "I didn't even see the shot coming." stated Linskey "Kelly wasn't out there for that goal but I still blame him" Things got uglier as the Guppies resident tough guy Dave Armenia got into a tussle with an opposing player. "How'd I do" asked a confused Armenia "I was just defending the good name of Killingworth!"  While this was all going on District 6 stepped up there game and had the Guppies on there back fins. The Guppies were totally out played in the final minutes of the game as District 6 scored Five unanswered goals to make it 9-7! Killingworth managed to hold on for the win but a stage was set for a rematch. However, if these two teams meet again it will most likely be in the playoffs. Either way it should be a great game.

The Guppies face off next on Thursday Aug 4th at 8pm vs the Cyclones.

SIDE NOTES:

- John Stevenson was a healthy scratch Thursday night

- Stevenson #10 jersey was hanging up in the Zrink's Pro Shop on Thursday night, however, rink officials decided to place the jersey in a vault after receiving several disturbing phone calls from form Guppie Craig Zito. Zito was quote in the Boston Globe recently "I can't believe they gave Stevenson #10! I asked for #10 and was told I couldn't have it, instead I got #78! I'm a premier player and this is the way I get treated? It's BS!"

- Thursday's victory was the Guppies 26th in a row and is one shy of tying the record of 27.  Also, The Guppies haven't lost a game in over a year! Their last lost was against the Mad Dogs on 7/29/04.
