District 6 Beats Guppies in OT 3-2!

Glastonbury, CT September 8, 2005. ZRink - Killingworth Guppies Spring 2005 season.

September 8, 2005- When The Guppies and District 6 faced off Thursday night everyone in the packed Zrink Arena expected to see a great hockey game......both teams delivered.....Big Time! The Guppies had beaten District 6 earlier in the season, which was the District only blemish on an other wise perfect season. Both teams cruised through the Puck C playoff brackets to get this point and finished first and second in the regular season standings. From the drop of the puck District 6 was all over the Guppies keeping them pinned in their defensive zone for must of the First Half.  At the 11:59 mark, District 6 would take the lead as Matt Gould beat Linskey walking through the lower slot. It got worse as only three minutes later as Dan Gould would score to give District 6 the 2-0 lead. The Guppies tried to get on the board but they were turned aside time after time. At the end of the first the Gupps were down 2-0. Many Guppy fans were hard pressed to find another time when the Guppies were shutout for an entire half. "I'm not sure it's ever happened" stated Mike Halle in a post game interview.

The Second Half  started with several Guppie opportunities to get on the scoreboard but as they did all night District 6 turned them aside. After the intial first push by the Guppies the District pushed back but Joe Linskey was great down the stretch."Linksey gave us a chance to win tonight, he put on quite a show" stated Guppies forward Jay Zito. The Guppies finally broke through when Dan Pequita (0-1-1) found Tim Poulin (1-0-1) who fire the puck past the District's netminder, with just 7:38 remaining. Down 2-1 and with time clicking away the Guppies tried frantically to get the tying goal. With Just over four minutes remaining Marc Crayton (0-1-1) passed the puck to Brian Kelly(1-0-1) who fired a low shot into the District's net. Tied at two, both teams had their opportunities to score however, at the end of regulation the teams were tied 2-2.

In Overtime the Guppies took control of the game and really looked liked they had the momentum for the first time. Things got better when the District's Dave Aloi was given a roughing penalty after he took Tim Poulin down in front of the District's net. During the power play the Guppies had several great opportunities to score but couldn't capitalize. The Five minute overtime would come and go and the teams were still dead locked in a 2-2 tie.

The next phase was the shoot out, Guppies shooters were Kelly, Pequita, Jay Zito, and Poulin. Kelly and Pequita were stopped on their attempts before Zito scored to tie the shoot out at one. The District would score again to make it 2-1. Poulin came down for the Guppies final shoot, he managed to get the District netminder down but then hit the post. The District went on to victory. Several players from other teams and fans congratulated both teams on a great game. "It's tough to lose a game like that but we had a great effort" stated Kelly in the post game interview.
