Guppies Swim Into Finals Beating Dead Goalies 8-5
Glastonbury, CT September 1, 2005. ZRink - Killingworth Guppies Spring 2005 season.
September 7 , 2005- Tuesday night's Semi-Finals game between the Guppies and the Dead Goalies was a fast paced, high intensity, well played contest in which both teams put on a great show for the sold out Zrink crowd. On the line the rights to move on to the finals and face off Thursday night against District 6 (who won their Semi-finals game early in the night). During the first few minutes of play the teams went back and forth trading scoring opportunities. Brian Kelly (4-1-5) would eventually open up the scoring when he beat DG netminder Bob Burbank with a back hand to the lower stick side of the net. The Guppies one goal lead was short lived as the Dead Goalie's Kevin Bartos tied the game at one. The teams were dead locked at one as both Burbank and Guppies netminder Joe Linskey traded some spectacular saves. Jason Zito (1-2-3) gave the Gupps the 2-1 lead when he came down the left side and fired a shot that Burbank got a piece of but couldn't stop. With just over 5minutes remaining in the half, Kelly fired a slap shot past Burbank to give the Guppies some breathing room. The 3-1 was short lived, as less than a minute later John Hoyne beat Linskey to cut the lead to one. With just over a minute remaining in the half Kelly would catch a Dan Pequita (1-3-4) pass and go in and beat Burbank on the Breakaway, Linskey seemed confused "Who the heck is the new guy wearing Kelly's jersey? He's Good!"
In the Second Half the two teams again traded scoring opportunities with no results early on. However, as the Half continued the Guppies started to settle into a defensive mode and the Dead Goalies turned it up a notch. With 12:05 remaining the Dead Goalies would score to make it a one goal game. The game was a lot closer than the Killingworth hopeful had hoped for....and it was about to get closer. When just .27 seconds later Bartos would score for the Goalies tying the game at Four. With the scored tied at four and time clicking away the Goalies had the momentum and they were looking to take the lead. However, Linskey was equal to the task make several big saves to keep the Guppies in the game. With just under 8 minutes remaining Dave Armenia (1-1-2) crashed the Goalies net and fired a rebound past Burbank for the 5-4 lead. Only moments later Zito made a great cross ice pass to a streaking Rob Murphy (1-3-4) which he finished to take the two goal lead (6-4). However the Goalies played hard all night and were not about to go away quietly. Miguel Feliciano would make it a one goal game when he fired a shot over the Guppies net.....wait......... over the net? The Puck hit the glass behind the net and came right back in front where Feliciano fired the rebound past Linskey. The one goal lead was alittle to close for the Guppies but things were going to get worse when Brian Kelly was called for tripping with just 2:23 remaining. Murphy, Zito, and Pequita went out to kill the penalty and they worked the penalty kill well. The Goalies would eventually pull Burbank with just under a minute remaining in the game for the extra attacker. Pequita would take advantage of this when he fired a shot from the Guppies blue line into the Dead Goalies empty net. The Guppies were up by two when Kelly scored to secure the victory with just .15 seconds remaining.
The Guppies face off against District 6 for the League Championship on Thursday night. The two Teams have shared the the top spot ion the standings all season long and had a great game earlier in the season which the Guppies won 9-7. This should be a great game! Tickets for the upper sections of the Zrink go on sale on Wednesday 9/7 at noon.
