GUPPIES LET AVALANCHE SLIDE AWAY WITH VICTORY 9-7!
Glastonbury, CT June 18, 2009. ZRink - Killingworth Guppies Summer 2009 season.
06/18/2009- Thursday night's game between the Guppies and the spring 2009 season "C" league champs, the Avalanche, marked the coaching debut of former Guppies forward Steve Fink. Coach Fink looked like a coaching genius early on. The Guppies jumped out to an early 3 - 0 advantage, as Brian Mulcahy (1, 1) would score on a pass from Keith Millen (2, 4); followed by Brian Kelly (2, 2) from Dan Pequita (0, 2) and then Dave Armenia (1, 0) from Millen and Rob Murphy (0, 1). The Avalanche would get two late goals in the 1st half to cut the Guppies lead to 3 to 2. Greg Marshall made his debut as the Guppies starting net minder and he did not disappoint the fans as he made save after save after save after save. At one point Marshall was over heard saying "I know these guys aren't natural defense men, but do they even know where the defensive zone is?"
Coach Fink continued to look like a coaching genius as the Guppies would score
three more goals to the Avalanche's one, making it 6 - 3 Guppies, this in spite
of the Guppies losing stand out defense man Rob Murphy to a lower body injury
at the end of the 1st half. Millen from Kelly started the 2nd half scoring and
then Jason Zito (2, 1) from Kelly. The Avalanche scored and the Guppies answered
right back on Zito's second goal of the night.
As all of you in Guppies nation realize, no Guppies lead is safe and Coach Fink
a former player had to also foresee the fins coming off the Guppies at some
point. That point happened to be while the Guppies were on a four minute power
play. The Guppies would score during the first power play. The Guppies would
then allow five unanswered goals. That is not a misprint, that is 5 unanswered
goals, one of which was short handed. The five unanswered goals and the Guppies
snatching defeat from the jaws of victory left Coach Fink at a loss for words.
In fact it was so bad, that there were unconfirmed reports that Coach Fink booked
the earliest flight out of town that he could find, we will see if Coach Fink
returns to the bench this Thursday @ 9 p.m. as the Guppies take on their next
opponent. Despite not getting the win, Greg Marshall looked solid in net for
the Guppies as he made 45 saves.
Tonight's sponsors included The Crayton & Crayton Team "Making Your
Home our Business" power play, the Burns and Kelly Insurance Guppies penalty
kill and the Starpulse.com player of the game.
SIDE NOTES:
