Glastonbury, CT September 27, 2005. ZRink - Killingworth Guppies Spring 2005 season.
September 27, 2005- Fortunately for the Killingworth Guppies Tuesday night most of their team showed up for the game. However, the Stingers weren't as lucky as they only had 5 skaters at game time. The Guppies can testify how difficult it is to play one game with only five skaters, but, the Stingers were about to double their pleasure. Their 8pm contest against the Guppies was the first of two games on Tuesday for the Stingers as they were scheduled a Double-header "Poor Bastards!" it was the only thing Dave Armenia uttered when he heard about the Stingers plight. While the Gupps felt bad for their opponent they also knew they needed this game to stay in the early hunt for playoff positioning. Brian Kelly (3-0-3) would give the Guppies the one goal lead when Jason Zito (1-1-2) made a great pass through traffic to find Kelly crashing to the net. Kelly would score a shorthanded goal about five minutes later to give the Guppies the 2-0 lead midway though the Half. With the Stingers playing a more defensive style, the Guppies swarmed the offensive zone looking to add to their lead. Zito would give the Guppies the 3-0 lead with just over three minutes remaining. At the Half the Gupps were in control, up 3-0 and looking for more.
Early in the Second Half, Guppies Rookie Keith Millen (2-0-2) scored his first goal in Guppies blue. "The kid looked really excited to get that goal, I could see the tears start to build up in his eyes" stated Guppies forward Marc Crayton in a post game interview. He added "I know he was looking for the puck after the game". Kelly would score his third of the night after picking off a Stingers pass and walking in on a breakaway. Only seconds later, Millen would take a great pass from Dave Armenia (0-2-2) and beat the Stingers netminder for his second goal of the night. Joe Linskey looked to be heading to a Shutout victory but it was lost midway through the half when Kelly lost the puck in his skates which resulted in a Stingers 2-on-1. After scoring their only goal of the night the Stingers took control of the game, however, Linskey made some great saves down the stretch to keep them off the board. Not to be out done Rob Murphy (0-3-3) made some great defensive plays to help Linskey out. Murph however, did have some offensive trouble, ringing the Stingers goal post not once, not twice but three times in the final minutes of play.
The Guppies face off next against District 5 on 10/9 at 6:00pm.
